Waxed oak will not hold tape or treads. Alcohol wipe at minimum. Bare wood or a dull finish is the goal.

Peel, set, press from the center. Do not walk the flight until the last one is down.

Avoid heavy traffic for 24 hours on wood, especially in a cold stairwell.

Mistakes that make this fail

Sticking it to soap film
If the stair still feels slick after a rinse, you are gluing to lotion. Alcohol wipe until it squeaks.
Covering the wrong zone
The middle of a tub you never stand in is decoration. The step-in, the turn, and the stair nose are the land zones.
Using outdoor grit in a shower
Coarse tape belongs on shoes and weather. Barefoot baths want a fine texture. Mixing those is uncomfortable, not safer.
Walking on it in the first hour
your area heat, cold, and humidity all change set time. Give the adhesive a quiet stretch before the next shower or the next flight of stairs.

Keeping it clean after install

Clean in place. Warm water, a soft brush, and a household cleanser. You do not peel it off for a weekly scrub. Comet or Ajax is what we tell people for the mats.

If a white haze comes back, that is mineral or soap film sitting on the texture. Clean the film. The grit is still there.
